Jesus said, “I have much more to say to you, more than you can bear,” (John 16:12). This has always been true; God has more to say to us than we are able to bear. God always patiently waits for our ability before speaking to us about new things we ought to know? We see this exampled in Isaiah when he was criticized for his method of teaching. They said he was a man of “Strange lips,” “another tongue,” and taught, “Line upon line, precept upon precept; here a little, there a little.” Thus Jesus’ saying teaches us that God never leads us forward into a new truth concerning Himself until we have obeyed the truth already manifested. Jesus teaching is, “The Divine Law of Revelation,” and it is a call to us to yield.
Here then is the reason for arrested development in the Christian. It is because somewhere we disobeyed the truth, or we refused to submit. The Divine Law comes in to affect; there can be no advancement or development until there has been obedience to the particular thing God has already said to us?
The trouble is we are content not to know the deep things of God, and to live upon the surface of things. But Jesus is calling us to know the deeper things of God. And Jesus will lead us into deeper things, higher things, and better things if we will obey what he has already said.
