“The church of the living God, the pillar and ground of truth” (1Tim 3:15 KJV). A pillar is a column built on a foundation with the idea of giving something elevation. The lighthouse is a good metaphor for this verse in Timothy. The lighthouse is a pillar of many parts built on a foundation whose purpose is to elevate a light that will give warning to ships of pending danger. If the light is to be seen it must be lifted up.
The church is a lighthouse whose foundation is the Word of God. It is a pillar of many parts; the members of the church. Just as a lighthouse’s beacon must be lifted up in order to be seen, so the church must lift up Jesus in order for him to be seen. The church lifts up Jesus in order for His light to flash across the darkness.
The world needs to see Jesus, for there are dark stormed-tossed waters ahead on which mariners’ lives are being wrecked. There is a light that will save them; the light of Jesus. Are you helping to flash the light across those dark waters?
